Olympics 2004 - Friends In Team GB

I watched most of the 50 Greatest Olympic Moments TV programme on BBC 2 this afternoon - part of the BBC's coverage in the run up to the start of the Olympic Games 2004. The number one 'moment' was, of course, Steve Redgrave winning his fifth gold medal (in five Games). My girlfriend Fiona, an ex-rower, said that his achievement had meant that a lot more money was now allocated to helping rowing clubs train.

By an odd co-incidence, both myself and Fiona know people who have gone to Athens as part of the British Olympic teams. Fiona's schoolfriend Beth Tweddle is part of the gymnastics team, and has been featured heavily on television and in the press recently, as she is really in with the chance of winning a medal, particularly on the asymmetric bars.

Meanwhile, a student in the same year and on the same linguistics degree course as me (a group of under 30 students), Christine Ohuruogu, qualified to run the 400m for Britain. Her qualification was a bit of a shock, as in qualifying she beat her personal best by over a second. I'm guessing she won't be coming back to UCL to finish her degree straight away...
