Megadrive Minidrive

I couldn’t resist buying this from the otherwise fairly rubbish gadgetshop in Covent Garden. It’s a plug-and-play games console which runs off batteries and contains 6 classic Sega Megadrive games, including Sonic The Hedgehog 2:

I never usually play computer games, on console or PC, but this appealed to me purely because when I was little my childminder’s children had a Megadrive with the Sonics, and I was always jealous. And I’ve always been bitter, but not anymore. Sonic is as addictive and enjoyable as it ever was – they don’t make ‘em like that anymore. 2D platform games are where it’s at.

P.S If anyone knows how to get past the boss in Wing Fortress Zone, please let me know…

Certainly. I used to love Sonic 2 when I was a nipper. Here’s the Shiny Guide to the Wing Fortress Boss.

The platforms are the key. Remember there are 3, so don’t jump on any until they’re all out!

The platforms move past each other on their route, so with some good timing, you can swap platform simply by walking between them in some instances. This isn’t possible all the time, but helps massively when trying to keep from the floor and thus the danger of the spikes underneath the platforms.

The boss’s weak spot is the laser beam head, but it can only be hit when it is charging. Ideally, you would float on a platform underneath it, then continuously jump in order to give it a good whack. It’s possible to hit it about 3 times in sucession with a bit of practice.

Avoid the laser beams any way you can, and try and keep off the floor if you can help it. 8 hits, and he’ll be a goner.

Once you’ve beaten the boss, don’t go down the hole in the ground, but jump across to where Robotnik was standing. Continue right into the wall with a couple of windows until you stop, and then jump right again to find a hidden extra life.
