Busaba Eathai

On saturday, Fiona and I went out to eat at the thai restaurant called Busaba Eathai (eat thai) on Store Street. It’s a chain created by the guy behind Wagamama’s, the fantastic Japanese ramen noodle resaurants. We discovered it in Time Out’s Cheap Eats in London book, which is quite good.

The food was pretty good - I had a lamb shank curry, which was delicious, and full of great thai flavours. The atmosphere is nice too, with communal tables (only big and square rather than long and thin as they are at Wagamama’s) and lots of dark wooden panelling which actually looks feels quite comforting.

I was initially confused by toilet symbols though. They’re not the standard (and there is a standard, ISO 7000, I just discovered) symbols, instead being a bit more abstract:

Of course, after a few seconds you can figure out that the symbols represent the different ways that men and women go to the loo: standing up vs sitting down. But it took me a moment to work that out, not helped by having drunk a couple of beers first.

I was even more suprised to find a whole article written about the Busaba toilets at the Wardour Street branch, written by a former BBC collegue of mine, Ashley Stewart-Noble…
