King Kong

Went to see King Kong at the Prince Charles cinema after work on Thursday night. I had forgotten how long it was - we didn't leave the cinema till 11PM! Still, it was quite an entertaining film, with funny and farcical moments. I didn't really buy into the characters - the woman gets slightly over-attached to this ape, the writer character is just plain woolly and useless, and the Jack Black character goes off the rails a bit.

I suppose though that it's not the characters that are important but the special effects. The ape does indeed look pretty good, but the dinosaurs are a bit cartoony (why is it that the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park still look so realistic?). There's a bit of an unexplained scene with the natives at the start of the film, where they're all shown as being completely crazy and uncivilised, but then we don't see them again or see any explanation. Maybe this is meant to be a throwback to films of old?

Entertaining all in all though, although it could really do with chopping down to a couple of hours. And with there being several scenes that drag out too long, that shouldn't have been too hard.
