A presentation at the Museum of London
I gave a short presentation at the Museum of London yesterday, as part of a ‘hub’ meeting of four London museums (the Geoffrey, the Horniman and the London Transport, as well as the host venue). The topic was ‘e-learning’, which generally seems to translate to online learning resources. I was a pretty late addition to the agenda - having only been landed the role a few days before - and so wasn’t initially sure what to talk about. In the end though, I presented some of the ideas and thinking we’ve been doing at the Science Museum about how to integrate ‘e-learning’ type content alongside the more museum-related content such as visiting information, etc.
It was interesting to watch the other presentations too. We were all using Powerpoint, but our styles seemed to differ. I had by far the least amount of text on the slides, partly due to preparing it last minute, but mostly as a deliberate decision. I wanted to present concrete problem we’d faced, and our proposed solutions, rather than abstract and wordy ideas and trends. So there was a few screenshots to talk to, a couple of photos, one or two bullet points, and that was about it.

My talk seemed to get a good reaction, with a few questions being asked. After the presentations, we talked in groups about some of the projects that the hub museums are planning. There was some good, constructive conversation and some sharing of ideas. I did come to realise, though, that many of the museums were struggling to develop website materials with even fewer resources than us.
