The news that NASA wants to go back to the moon, and set up a permanent base there is simply awesome - in the true sense of the word. I mean, this has been a stated ambition of the US Government for a few years now, but seeing this news all over the telly and in the papers today makes it all seem more real.
I'm not sure whether to be outraged at the ridiculous cost of the proposed missions, irresponsibly extravagant when put against the horrible poverty that exists on this planet, or to simply allow myself to be unashamedly excited by the prospect of being able to look at the moon and say "people are on that". I mean, the 'man lands on moon' was an event that defined a generation, wasn't it? And who wouldn't want to be part of that?
The moon. A permanent base. Possible trip to Mars. It's like we're living in the future*.
And I'm thrilled.
* Okay, so it hasn't happened yet, but still...
