Whilst the bird flu outbreak is undoubtedly the story of the weekend, I find the news that Italy has suspended professional football matches due to violence quite stunning. I don't really follow any sports at all, but this feels like a big thing. For there to be so much violence over football seems terrifying.
Of course, it's probably not just football. The BBC news article suggests that some of the violence at the stadiums is political - "of Italy's top 128 professional clubs, 42 have significant political orientations among their fans, with 27 veering significantly to the right and 15 to the far left - when far right meets far left it is never pleasant". Hmm.
