The London 2012 Olympics ‘Work in Progress’ blog
The topic of the day (in offices and homes in London at least), is the new London 2012 Olympics logo. It is, of course, pretty rubbish, and I predict that we’ll see a growing uprising (and subsequent media reportage) against it over the coming days and weeks. Possibly even followed by a humiliating climb-down.
I don’t want to say too much about that, however, but rather to point at the London 2012 Olympics ‘Work in Progress’ blog. Whilst they’ve been quite good in keeping it up to date by posting regular stories, they’ve completely missed most of the conventions and advantages of writing a blog. There seems to be very little linking-out to other blogs, and not much of an attempt to engage with an online community at all. What’s worse is that there are very few comments, and I suspect that this is because they aren’t being published.
Take the post this morning announcing the new 2012 Olympic logo, for instance. This ought to be a highly popular post, linked to from hundreds of other blogs and news articles, and with a lively debate in the comments. Instead, there isn’t yet a single comment published, and this can’t be through lack of comments being submitted, as I posted a comment this morning (being polite and constructive) that hasn’t yet made it through.
If their blog is going to be anything more than glorified press releases, they need to post a new entry reflecting the controversy surrounding their new logo (with links to the key websites) within the next couple of days, together with either their defence of the logo or position moving forward.
In these ‘fast-paced internet times’ you’ve gotta react fast, or be left dead in the water.
