Hi Jem, and thanks for your response.

I didn't think I was pre-moderating comments, but I've only just moved to this Wordpress installation so I'm still finding my feet a bit. Having just checked, I seem to have left it on the default option of requiring pre-moderation for a commenter's first comment. I've switched this off now, as Akismet seems to be pretty good at picking up on spam comments...

Hi Frankie

Its a common misperception but the majority of text comments posted to bbc.co.uk across our variety of boards, forums, spaces, and blogs are published straight to the server. Across the majority of message boards (the radio networks all have several popular boards and programme boards such as the archers or strictly come dancing), the football/sport community 606, and *some* of the threads on Have Your Say then if you leave a comment then (if you've registered with the BBC) it will be published straight away. All childrens content is currently pre-moderated.

Unfortunately our blogs infrastucture is suffering a bit and rather confuses this bold statement. Currently (we're in the middle of upgrading) all blog comments are pre-moderated. This is an admin challenge more than anything . Its not a policy issue. Its not the BBC being ultra cautious. The workflow is just not systematic enough for us to be confident that we can not miss messages. We expect all (childrens aside) blogs to move to reactive moderation (PM already has) in March.

So by then (apart from across childrens), 90% of text uploaded to the bbc (millions of comments a month) will be reactively or post moderated. ie: published live to the server and then only removed if another user alerts us to a post that potentially breaks our rules/the law. The remaining 10% will be around sensitive news stories .

So hopefully moderation shouldn't get in the way of meaningful user commenting. Now whether the comments are trivial, displayed so that they make sense, offer users the chance to annotate/add meaning, allow users to contact other users, used by users as a default because other communication channels aren't clear, used as "audience insight" by the BBC. I'll leave for another time.
